The dealer gave me a different interpretation of 403 than the online description “Leather interior trim: Shale/Cocoa, Mini Perforated. This code identifies the factory upholstery material, color combination, or interior trim specification” This is for a 1997 Buick Encore GX. Could both descriptions be valid for different production periods?

A window sticker is helpful for customer-facing option names, while the build sheet is usually more detailed. If they disagree, the vehicle-specific dealer equipment list can help connect the sales name to 403.

I have seen this on a similar Buick Encore GX. The basic description was correct, but one related feature was part of a separate package. I would not assume the code includes every item mentioned in marketing material.

A clear photo of the build label, VIN report, and the relevant component would help. Do not post the full VIN publicly; the last eight characters are normally enough for a parts-counter discussion.

This sounds more like a documentation mismatch than a decoder error. Different databases often shorten the same factory description in different ways.

If you are documenting the vehicle, save both the original wording and the readable explanation. That preserves the factory terminology while making the record understandable later.

My experience has been positive, but the benefit depends on how the vehicle is used. I would treat 403 as confirmation of the configuration, then evaluate whether that equipment matters for your driving.

The dealer should be able to pull a VIN-specific equipment or parts record. Ask them to search by VIN rather than entering only the three-character code.
