The dealer gave me a different interpretation of 5D4 than the online description “Aerial Work Platform Vocational Package: Provides calibrations specific to chassis with an upfit consisting of an Aerial Lift, Bucket or Boom Lift. This code identifies a factory option package; its exact contents may vary by model and model year” This is for a 2016 Chevrolet Suburban. Could both descriptions be valid for different production periods?

On these vehicles, similar descriptions can use different codes because of supplier changes or package combinations. The code itself is useful, but the VIN-specific parts catalog is better before ordering anything.

I would avoid buying retrofit parts until the connectors and module support are confirmed. Returning electronic or VIN-programmed components can be difficult.

The safest interpretation is the one tied to the exact VIN, model year, platform, and market. In general, 5D4 matches “Aerial Work Platform Vocational Package: Provides calibrations specific to chassis with an upfit consisting of an Aerial Lift, Bucket or Boom Lift. This code identifies a factory option package; its exact contents may vary by model and model year” but the included hardware can vary between applications.

I would start by checking the original build sheet and then compare the physical equipment on the vehicle. A sales or option code confirms the factory record, but it does not prove that every original component is still installed.
