01J versus another similar code on GMC Sierra 1500

01J — Seat trim color: Brownstone. This code identifies the factory color assigned to the seat upholstery or seat trim. Browse RPO codes →

I have seen 01J described as “Seat trim color: Brownstone. This code identifies the factory color assigned to the seat upholstery or seat trim” but another database uses slightly different wording. Is this normally because the meaning changes by platform, market, or model year?

That code should be read as a factory configuration identifier, not necessarily a guarantee of a separate dashboard control. Some equipment operates automatically or is bundled with another system.

The dealer should be able to pull a VIN-specific equipment or parts record. Ask them to search by VIN rather than entering only the three-character code.

Some codes are reused across several brands, but that does not always mean the parts are identical. Model, trim, drivetrain, and production date can all matter.

Before buying, I would inspect the relevant component and take a photo of its label or part number. That often resolves whether the vehicle still has the factory configuration associated with 01J.

On these vehicles, similar descriptions can use different codes because of supplier changes or package combinations. The code itself is useful, but the VIN-specific parts catalog is better before ordering anything.

I have seen this on a similar GMC Sierra 1500. The basic description was correct, but one related feature was part of a separate package. I would not assume the code includes every item mentioned in marketing material.
